How to paint the canvas

Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can paint a needlepoint canvas all by yourself.

1. Make the outline

You need to start by getting a piece of tracing paper. Then you must create an outline for where you want your painting to be. You can use a pencil and ruler to create a box of any size on the tracing paper.

2. Trace your design

From your design stencil, you can now trace out the item you wish to draw. All you need to do is place the tracing paper on your design and trace it out using a pencil. Once you are done tracing the design out with a pencil, you can now trace it using a permanent marker or a pen.

3. Place the canvas on the design

Once you are done tracing, make sure you secure the tracing paper with artist tape. After this, you can place the needlepoint canvas on top of your design. Be sure to place it correctly over the design. Align the edges of the outlined square you first made with the canvas’ vertical and horizontal threads. After this, you can tape the canvas in place too.

4. Tape the surrounding areas

Now you need to take the artist tape and cover the area you are not painting. Mask-off the design region using this tape and secure it in place. The salvage of the needlepoint canvas usually has an orange line. This must either be placed on the left or the right side of the design you are making.

5. Begin painting

Now you can start painting. Take your brushes and your craft paint along with water and a cloth. You need to paint the intersections of the needlepoint canvas first instead of free-flowing the stencil under your canvas. This makes your work of sewing easier and gives you the exact colors you want the threads to be. Follow the intersections that collide with your design. If you accidentally spill some paint over threads, you can cover it up using white paint. You can use as many colors as you want and make your painting vibrant.

6. Let dry

Let your canvas dry for a while. Once it is dry, you can go ahead and remove the artist’s paint from the sides of the canvas. This will give you a clean design free of accidents.
